As metritis (syn. Myometritis ) one refers to inflammation of the muscular layer ( myometrium ) of the uterus . In the case of pronounced, purulent inflammation of the uterine lining ( endometritis ), this can generally spread to the myometrium. Clinically, in metritis, the uterus (with existing endometritis) is particularly tender on pressure. It is a rarity in human medicine .

In animals, metritis usually results from endometritis immediately after birth due to bacteria ascending through the birth canal. It is favored by postpartum restraint and injuries to the uterus by the newborn during the birth process or through obstetric measures. Metritis manifests itself as severe general disturbances, fever and foul-smelling vaginal discharge. There is a risk of developing septicemia or endotoxemia . Sows usually suffer from inflammation of the udders and milk deficiency at the same time (the so-called mastitis-metritis-agalactia complex). The treatment is carried out with broad-spectrum antibiotics and drugs that promote the emptying of the abnormal contents of the uterus ( prostaglandin F2α ). Removal of the uterus is also often considered in dogs and cats . In mares, specific metritis ( contagious uterine inflammation of the horse ) can also occur as a result of the transmission of the Taylorella equigenitalis bacterium during mating. In March 2014, a study was reported in which vaccines against metritis in cows were developed and successfully tested for the first time. The infection rate decreased by up to 83 percent.
