Ross Stores Inc ., Sold under the brand name Ross Dress for Less trades, is an American chain of discount stores , headquartered in Dublin ( California ). In 2018, Ross operates 1,483 stores in 37 states, the District of Columbia and Guam , covering much of the country, but has no presence in New England , New York , northern New Jersey , Alaska and areas of the Midwest .

The company is part of the NASDAQ 100 index and had 2018 sales of approximately $ 15 billion.

history

The first Ross department store was opened in 1950 by Morris "Morrie" Ross in San Bruno , California. Morris worked 85 hours a week, doing all the shopping and accounting for his department store. In 1958, Ross sold his business to William Isackson to become a residential and commercial property developer. Isackson expanded the company to six branches in San Bruno, Pacifica , Novato , Vacaville , Redwood City and Castro Valley . In 1982, a group of investors, including Mervin Morris, the founder of the Mervyn's chain , bought the six Ross department stores in San Francisco, converted the format to cheap retail stores, and expanded the chain to 107 stores in three years. By the end of 1995, the chain had 292 stores in 18 states and annual sales of 1.4 billion US dollars. By 2012, Ross hit $ 9.7 billion for the fiscal year with 1,091 stores in 33 states and had 108 additional stores through subsidiary Dd's Discounts in 8 states. Ross Stores moved its headquarters from Newark to Pleasanton in the Tri-Valley area in 2003 .
