Mary Forbes

Mary Forbes ( December 30, 1879 or 1883 in Hornsey , England - July 22, 1974 in Beaumont , California , USA ) was a British actress.

Life

When Mary Forbes made her film debut in Great Britain in 1919, she was already an established theater manager and actress who ran a London theater and had already played on Broadway in New York. The actress appeared on Broadway in a total of eight productions until 1945. In her over 130 films, most of which were made in Hollywood, she was mainly cast in medium to small supporting roles. In many films she played mothers, aunts and grandmothers; often also grande dames of better society. Her better-known films include the drama In Another Land (1932), the screwball comedy The Terrible Truth (1937) and Frank Capra's Oscar-winning film classic Life Artist (1938), in which she played the mother of James Stewart . In the 1940s she made three appearances in the Sherlock Holmes film series with Basil Rathbone .

Forbes also appeared on television as a guest actress in the 1950s, but slowly withdrew from acting. In 1958 she had her last small role in Houseboat alongside Cary Grant and Sophia Loren . She was also the mother of actors Ralph Forbes , with whom she appeared in two films, and Brenda Forbes , who later embarked on a successful theater career. She was married to the concert singer AJ Forbes. She was over ninety years old when she died.
