history

Today's Menifee was originally inhabited by the Luiseño Indian tribe. In the 18th century the area was conquered by the Spaniards and ceded by Mexico to the United States in the Mexican-American War in 1850 .

Agriculture was very important in the middle of the 19th century. Mining also played an important role from the early 1880s after Luther Menifee Wilson had previously discovered a quartz vein . Menifee is named after him today.

In the early 1960s, the area began to develop from Sun City . This was done by Del Webb , who at that time was beginning to establish the concept of retirement cities known as Sun Citys . Sun City, California is now part of Menifee.

Around 1990 Menifee continued to grow as a planned town . The lack of jobs in the industrial sector and a strong retail sector mean that many residents work in other cities such as Temecula or Murrieta . Numerous new homes, lakes and shelters have been added recently in Menifee. In this way, many new residents from the rest of the Inland Empire and Los Angeles could be attracted .

On June 3, the residents of the census-designated places Menifee, Sun City , Quail Valley, Paloma Valley and parts of Romoland decided to merge their hometowns to form the City of Menifee. This change is effective as of October 1, 2008; Menifee has since become the 26th city in Riverside County .

politics

The Menifee Valley is a strictly conservative and Republican region in the Southern California Inland Empire .
