Gene Calderazzo (* 23. April 1961 in New York City ) is an American drummer of modern jazz .

Live and act

Calderazzo, whose younger brother is the pianist Joey Calderazzo , studied at Berklee College of Music from 1979 to 1981 together with Branford Marsalis , Wallace Roney , Jeff Watts and Marvin Smitty Smith , before continuing his studies at Long Island University in Brooklyn . In New York he appeared with Joe Henderson , Michael Brecker , Lionel Hampton and Reggie Workman , furthermore with Pharoah Sanders , Eddie Henderson , James Moody , Phil Woods , Benny Golson .

Calderazzo has lived in Great Britain since 1995, where he taught at the Royal Academy of Music , Trinity College of Music , the Guildhall School and the Birmingham Conservatoire . As a drummer he worked with Steve Lacy , Mike Gibbs , Radiohead , Ulf Wakenius , Evan Parker and Bheki Mseleku . Together with pianist Liam Noble and bassist Oli Hayhurst he plays in Julian Siegel's quartet , which released the albums Urban Theme Park (2011) and Vista (2018). He also formed the Partisans jazz quartet with Julien Siegel, guitarist Phil Robson and bassist Thad Kelly, which was active for more than 20 years and released five albums by 2019. He was also a member of Jamie Anderson Dogcatchers Trio , with which two albums were created. He also toured with Zoe Rahman and with Philip Catherine . He can also be heard on albums by Dave Green , Gordon Beck , Guy Barker , Julian Argüelles , Gary Husband , Hans Koller , Anita Wardell and Nils Wülker .
