Jeff Tain Watts
Jeff "Tain" Watts (born January 20, 1960 in Pittsburgh , Pennsylvania ) is an American jazz drummer.
Live and act
Watts studied classical drums at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh and jazz at the Berklee School of Music . He became a member of the Wynton Marsalis Quintet until 1988. After working with George Benson , Harry Connick Jr. and McCoy Tyner , he played on Branford Marsalis ' album Trio Jeepy in 1988 and became a member of his quartet in 1989. He also performed with Ricky Ford , Robin Eubanks , Danilo Pérez , Michael Brecker , Betty Carter , Courtney Pine , Geri Allen , Joey Calderazzo , Claudia Acuña and Robi Botos . In 1990 he played a jazz musician in Spike Lee's Mo 'Better Blues alongside Denzel Washington and Wesley Snipes .
In 1991 his first album was released as the band leader Megawatts with Kenny Kirkland as the pianist, and in 1998 Citizen Tain . Bar Talk followed in 2002 and the live recording Detained at the Blue Note in 2004 . Since 2005 he has been working in a quartet with Marcus Strickland (saxophone), Eric Revis (bass) and David Budway (piano). Numerous albums in which he was involved have been nominated for the Grammy Award ; six of them received it (as of 2011).
