Life

The son of the sculptor Etienne Perincioli, who immigrated from Piedmont , and Rosa Dietrich from Bern, trained as a sculptor with his father in Berlin and Paris in the 1930s . His teachers included the sculptors Charles Despiau , Wilhelm Otto , Walter Linck and the sculptor Germaine Richier . He was married to the artisan Hélène Perincioli geb. Jörns (1911-1996).

The young artist achieved a breakthrough with the execution of the portrait of Fritz de Quervain , director of Bern's Inselspital . For the Swiss National Exhibition of 1939 in Zurich , he created the figure Narcissus , which now stands in front of the Bern State Archives, and the relief Florian and his angel for the Bern fire station . This was followed by further orders for public buildings and churches, large figurative and later abstract compositions in stone, wood, bronze, aluminum and steel.

Fred Zaugg wrote in 2011: “Many meet his characters every day. [...] Marcel Perincioli's work is less in museums than outside in the city, in the agglomeration and far beyond that in our living spaces. "

Perincioli created for the Bernese Nydeggkirche two bronze doors, bells reliefs in Gümligen , pulpit, communion table and baptismal font of Chapelle Romande in Thun and the Stephanus Church in the mirror , bronze reliefs on the church Bern-Bethlehem , abstract sculpture in Kirchgemeindehaus Bolligen and angel figure for the Schosshaldenfriedhof than Part of the cemetery design: “The sheer size of the sculpture, but also the formal language and the expression leave no doubt: This is not a cute angel figure, but a powerful figure with a firm footing - connected to the earthly, but still sublime. The flowing lines - the merging of body and garment - take the angels' severity away and make them appear friendly. His arms are outstretched protectively and welcoming ... "

Fred Zaugg sees the bronze doors of the Nydegg Church as central to the work of the sculptor, who himself said about this work, “... it is one of his most important. Perhaps because here in the old sacred building he confronted and combined his unmistakable sculptural language with the old construction of the cassettes. In doing so, he drew an arc from the present to the Renaissance, even to the Middle Ages. The other bridge, characteristic of the artist's whole philosophy, connects him with antiquity, with mythology. "

Time and again, Perincioli dedicated himself to people in motion: groups of runners, javelin throwers and, as small sculptures, dancers.

Johanna Strübin Rindisbacher writes: “Perincioli is committed to the expression of - external and internal - movement. Mobility and openness also shape his artistic attitude. In his work he reflects on expressions from Germaine Richier to Henry Moore . Initially he mainly worked in stone, then increasingly in bronze. Today he models the templates directly in wax. After the end of the war, under the impression of functionalist architecture, he also turned to non-representational compositions, including wood.

His preferred subjects to this day are runners, dancers and javelin throwers as individual figures or as groups, and recently also horse studies. Powerful, expressive monumental works (javelin thrower, 1964, Bern , Haus des Sports; Engel, 1959, Bern, Schosshaldenfriedhof ) stand alongside moving, delicate small sculptures (dancers, 1960s to 1980s). In some of his small bronzes, for example in Frau am Fenster (1962) and in the group of works Joie de vivre (1972), Perincioli captures magical moments of sensual fascination. The figurative and abstract small sculptures have a playful and some also a poetic quality (Schlüsselmannli, 1966; Septett, 1965). His drawings on figurative motifs reflect the speed of writing and the immediacy of expression. "

Fred Zaugg emphasizes the artist's humanistic concerns: "Marcel Perincioli's last work is called« Liberté », his« refugee group »is in the ICRC in Geneva, and his heart belonged to the handicapped and the afflicted as well as to the dancers and the athletes."

From 1961 to 1966, Perincioli served as the central president of the Society of Swiss Painters, Sculptors and Architects (GSMBA). During this time, he explicitly encouraged women artists to join this association. He also obtained the possibility for the sculptors to make a series of up to six original casts for small sculptures.

In 2004 he and his children founded the "Foundation Hélène and Marcel Perincioli-Jörns", which supports young artists (especially dance and music) with scholarships.

The director Cristina Perincioli is his daughter.
