Paul Clarvis

Paul Clarvis (born April 9, 1963 in London ) is a British drummer and percussionist who has particularly emerged in modern jazz .

Live and act

Clarvis first played in a Dixieland band during his school days and later in rock bands ; he was also a member of the National Youth Orchestra. He received lessons from Jimmy Benson, later from Dave Hassell and Jim Blackley in Toronto, as well as instruction on the tabla from Yousuf Ali Khan. After winning a scholarship, he was able to study at the Royal College of Music from 1981 to 1983 . He first worked in musicals such as West Side Story and in the field of classical music with the London Sinfonietta and Leonard Bernstein before he was able to establish himself on the jazz scene in the 1990s . He worked with Gordon Beck and Nick Weldon and founded his own group, Orquestra Mahatma , with Stuart Hall , Sonia Slany and Thad Kelly , with which he also recorded. In 1996 he was part of the Stan Sulzmann quartet , the Alec Dankworth trio and Martin Speakes Five Pitch , but also accompanied Christine Tobin . Harrison Birtwistle made him a soloist on the Night of the Proms that same year . He toured with John Law and Tim Wells in 1998 as well as with Andy Sheppard . He was also a member of Colin Towns ' Mask Orchestra , Henry Lowthers Still Waters and formed Four in Perspective with Norma Winstone , Kenny Wheeler and Fred Hersch . John Williams also brought him to his friends . He also belonged to the trio Liquorice Stick Allsorts with Alan Barnes and Jim Hart .

As a studio musician, he often worked for the film studios. He has also worked for Mick Jagger , Elvis Costello , Elton John , Paul McCartney , Annie Lennox , Sting , Bryan Ferry , Mark-Anthony Turnage ( Greek ), Richard Thompson ( Industry ), Moondog ( Bigband ), John Adams ( Chamber Symphony ), McFly , John Harle ( Terror and Magnificence , Silencium ), Matthew Herbert , Hugh Masekela or Sally Potter ( The Roads not Taken ). As a professor, he taught at the Royal Academy of Music .
