Nick Weldon

Nicolas "Nick" Weldon (born March 19, 1954 in Cambridge ) is a British jazz musician ( piano , composition ) and author .

Weldon grew up in an inspiring environment: his mother is the writer Fay Weldon , his father is the actor and folk singer Colyn Davies; his stepfather played the trumpet and introduced him to jazz. He played the piano from the age of eleven; he also learned to play the guitar. He studied Romance studies and philosophy at the University of Keele and then lived in France, where he worked as a trained chef in Amiens and played with local musicians. In 1979 he moved to London, where he established himself as a professional musician, leading his own trio and playing with Joe Jackson . During the 1980s he worked with Art Subjects , Harry Beckett , Tommy Chase , Jim Mullen , Chris Hodgkins / Max Brittain, Don Weller / Bryan Spring and Kathy Stobart . With his own trio he accompanied traveling soloists such as Sonny Stitt , Bobby Watson , Teddy Edwards , Johnny Griffin and Jimmy Witherspoon . He also worked with Peter Ind , with whom he also appeared with Dewey Redman , Sheila Jordan and Harold Land . He is also a member of Paul Crumly's quartet.

Weldon was also active as a composer and wrote the music for a piece that was based on his mother's book Puffball ; he also created the radio play Laura Mae and the Olivardies (1994). He has also written the novella Idristan and lyrics such as “Lavender's Blue” (recorded by Christine Tobin and Claire Martin ) and “People We Once Knew”, the title track on his wife's first album, singer Andra Sparks.

Weldon is a professor at Trinity College of Music and the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama .
