Andy Cleyndert (* 8. January 1963 in Birmingham as Nicolas Andrew De Young Cleyndert ) is a British double bassist of the Modern Jazz , who also serves as music producer has emerged.

Life

Cleyndert comes from a musical family (two sisters are also professional musicians) and initially received violin lessons as a child , followed by singing lessons and a rudimentary training in piano and bassoon during school in Newport (Essex) . At the age of eleven he decided to play the double bass, which he taught himself as an autodidact after a few hours . When he left school in 1981, he worked in the house band of the George Chisolm Club in Manchester, where he accompanied traveling soloists such as Art Farmer and Joe Newman . In 1982 he moved to London, where he first played Jobs in the trad jazz scene , but soon appeared in the National Jazz Youth Orchestra and belonged to the groups of Bobby Wellins , Don Weller / Bryan Spring or Clark Tracey . In the next few years he toured with Bobby Watson , Ted Curson , Slim Gaillard and Red Rodney . With the Kenny Wheeler Big Band, in which the top British musicians were gathered, he recorded for the radio.

Cleyndert interrupted his career to study mathematics and psychology until 1990 ; then he was part of Ronnie Scott's combo , with whom he toured internationally. He then worked with Stan Tracey , with whom he recorded several albums, and with Gene Harris , with whom he also toured internationally. He also worked in the bands of Alan Barnes , Kathy Stobart , Don Weller, Simon Spillett and Annie Ross ; he also toured with Norma Winstone , Benny Green , Junior Mance , James Williams , Jon Gordon , Conte Candoli , Herb Ellis and Mundell Lowe . In 2009 he was awarded the British Jazz Awards as best bassist .

On his own label, Trio Records , he has released more than 20 albums by Stan Tracey, Junior Mance, Bobby Wellins, Martin Drew , Peter King , Don Weller, Mornington Lockett , Josephine Davies , Chris Biscoe and Colin Purbrook . He has also recorded with Tommy Chase , Tina May , Nick Weldon , John Donaldson and David Newton . He also held teaching positions at the Royal Academy of Music and various summer schools.
