Rainer Böhm (born October 14, 1977 in Ravensburg ) is a German jazz pianist , composer and arranger.

Live and act

Böhm received piano lessons from the age of four. As a teenager he founded his own jazz trio. From 1997 to 2001 he studied jazz and popular music at the University of Music and Performing Arts Mannheim . He completed his studies of jazz piano with Joerg Reiter and classical piano with Andrea Breichler with top grades; Between 1998 and 2000 he was a member of the Federal Jazz Orchestra . From 2007 to 2009 he completed a master's degree at Queens College in New York City with a DAAD scholarship .

In New York he founded a trio with Jeff Hirshfield and the Scottish bassist Aidan O'Donnell , which released the album Red Line in 2009 and also toured Germany in 2010. In 2011 he presented the album Berlin - New York with Ben Kraef . He has also played with the Mannheim group L 14, 16 for many years . In recent years he has also been touring with Lutz Häfner , the trio of Dieter Ilg , the trio of Giorgi Kiknadze and the quintet of Jürgen Seefelder and Ingrid Jensen . In the past, the pianist has also performed with Johannes Enders , Ari Hoenig , Rolf Kühn , Albert Mangelsdorff , Fritz Münzer , Thomas Siffling , Oliver Strauch , Malte Dürrschnabel and Randy Brecker . According to the Jazz Podium, Böhm “achieved an extraordinary presence in the scene”.

Since the summer semester of 2005, Böhm had a teaching position for jazz piano and ensemble management at the Mainz University of Music (after having previously been a substitute professor) . Currently (2018) he holds professorships for jazz piano and ensemble management at the University of Music in Nuremberg and at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Mannheim.

Prizes and awards

At the age of 18, Böhm won first prize at the jazz competition in Sigmaringen with his trio. Two years later, he won first prize in the jazz competition in his hometown. Towards the end of his studies he won the second prize at the “International Jazz Solo Piano Festival” in Montreux in 2000 and 2001. In 2003 he received the International Jazz Prize of the Nürnberger Nachrichten and won first prize in the “Jazz Hoeilaart International Belgium” competition, both in the category for the best soloist and in the ensemble evaluation. In 2005 he won (also as a soloist and in the ensemble evaluation) the prize of the Getxo International Jazz Festival in Spain. In 2007 he won first prize at the International Piano Solo Competition in Freiburg. In 2010 he was awarded the Baden-Württemberg Jazz Prize as "a highly virtuoso and creative pianist who, as an outstanding soloist and sensitive companion, was able to convince with American and European musicians in all his formations."

For the CD recorded with L 14, 16 , the musicians received the quarterly award of the German Record Critics in 2003 ; the album was also named “CD of the month” by the audio magazine in June 2003. In 2016 he received the Soloist Prize of the New German Jazz Prize and first prize as a member of the Bastian Jütte Quartet.
