Joerg Reiter

Joerg Reiter (* 22. November 1958 in Waiblingen , † 2. July 2015 in Mannheim ) was a German pianist of modern jazz .

Live and act

Reiter studied classical piano from 1978 to 1982 at the Stuttgart University of Music ; he was also active in the jazz scene since 1976 . Between 1982 and 1990 he was a pianist with the SWR Big Band , and from 1985 he was a member of Peter Herbolzheimer's Rhythm Combination & Brass . Since 1991 he has played regularly in a duo with flugelhornist Ack van Rooyen . He was also a member of Heinz von Hermann's Straight Six , led a quartet with Jürgen Seefelder and worked in a duo with the vibraphonist Tom van der Geld and the guitarist Frank Kuruc . Dieter Ilg and Wolfgang Haffner participated in his trio .

Reiter was on tour with Chaka Khan in 1994 and 1995 (including an album from the Montreux Jazz Festival ); the song "Gossamer Wings" composed for Khan was also recorded by Lionel Hampton . He also accompanied Al Jarreau , Dianne Reeves , Caterina Valente , Billy Cobham , Gerry Brown , Anthony Jackson and Kirk Whalum on television appearances . He also performed with Regine Dobberschütz and Helen Schneider and worked with Konstantin Wecker , Katja Ebstein and Joy Denalane .

In 1993 he was appointed professor at the new department for jazz and popular music at the University of Music and Performing Arts Mannheim . From 2002 he also taught at the Baden-Württemberg Film Academy . His students include Rainer Böhm , Volker Engelberth and Daniel Prandl .

He has also composed and produced music for radio, film and television.

Prizes and awards

In 1985 Reiter was the first to receive the Baden-Württemberg Jazz Prize together with Johannes Faber , in whose consortium he also played .
