Volker Engelberth

Volker Engelberth (born August 18, 1982 in Ruppichteroth ) is a German jazz pianist and composer .

Life

Engelberth began with classical piano lessons. From 2004 to 2009 he studied jazz piano with Professor Joerg Reiter at the Mannheim University of Music . He also received lessons from John Taylor , Hubert Nuss and Frank Chastenier . During his studies he was a member of the JugendJazzOrchester NRW (2004–2006), the Bundesjazzorchester (2005–2008) under the direction of Peter Herbolzheimer , Bill Dobbins and Marko Lackner and in Peter Herbolzheimer's Masterclass Bigband (2007–2009).

Engelberth has been a scholarship holder of the Baden-Württemberg Art Foundation since 2011 . In addition to his artistic activity, he works as a lecturer for jazz piano at the Stuttgart University of Music .

Act

The Volker Engelberth Trio has existed since 2010 with the Freiburg bassist Arne Huber and the Cologne drummer Silvio Morger . With this band Engelberth released his debut in 2012 under his own name Perpetuum on the Unit Records label . The CD Kaleidoskop followed in spring 2015 . In autumn 2015 Engelberth expanded the trio to include the Cologne trumpeter Bastian Stein and the Stuttgart saxophonist Alexander “Sandi” Kuhn , documented on the CD Jigsaw Puzzles (2016).

He can also be heard regularly as a sideman in numerous jazz formations. He currently plays in the bands of the guitarist Sebastian Böhlen , the tenorist Alexander "Sandi" Kuhn and the singer Stephanie Neigel as well as in duo projects with the bassist Thomas Stabenow and the singer Julia Pellegrini . From 2005 to 2008 he was a member of the Australian-German quartet ExChange , with whom he recorded two CDs. He can also be heard on recordings for labels such as Mons Records , BHM Records, Nagel-Heyer Records , edel-content and Rodenstein Records.

Prizes and awards

Engelberth was honored with the band ExChange in 2007 at the Jazz Young Talent Competition Straubing and the Jazz Young Talent Festival Leipzig; In 2008 the group received a third prize at the Biberacher Jazz Prize . In 2009 he and his trio won the Startbahn Jazz Straubing award .

In 2016 Volker Engelberth was awarded the Baden-Württemberg Jazz Prize. The jury stated that he “impresses as a composer and as an improviser” and “is one of the outstanding representatives of modern European jazz in Baden-Württemberg”.

In 2017 Engelberth was awarded the jazz prize of the city of Worms . In his music he "creates an individual balance between swinging American jazz tradition and classical influences and, with his well-dosed virtuosity, always keeps an eye on the artistic statement," the jury justified their decision.
