Barrie Gavin (born June 10, 1935 in London ) is an English film director.

Gavin started working for the BBC in 1961 as an assistant in film editing. Two years later he began working as a director of documentaries mainly about music. During his career he produced nearly 200 documentaries, often working with Pierre Boulez and Simon Rattle , as well as with the composers Karlheinz Stockhausen , Luciano Berio , Luigi Nono , Harrison Birtwistle , John Adams and others.

In 1977 he made a film about Kurt Weill for Hessischer Rundfunk . In the following 25 years he worked mainly in Germany for the Hessischer Rundfunk, the Westdeutscher Rundfunk , the Südwestrundfunk and the Sender Freies Berlin . In addition, he directed around 250 television broadcasts of concerts and operas in England, Germany and the USA. He has received numerous awards at film festivals and in 2008 a prize from the International Confederation of Music Publishers .
