Steve Cardenas (born February 5, 1959 ) is an American jazz guitarist .

Live and act

Cardenas lives in New York, where he a. a. worked with bands under Paul McCandless , Mark Isham and Jeff Beal , Marc Johnson and John Patitucci , Madeleine Peyroux and Norah Jones . He is a member of Paul Motian's Band, Charlie Haden's Liberation Music Orchestra , Joey Baron's group Killer Joey and the Ben Allison Quartet . As a sideman he took u. a. with Steve Million , Maria Muldaur , Mark Isham, Paul McCandless and the rock singer Tracy Bonham . In 2010 he worked with his own trio of Ben Allison and Mark Ferber , in 2019 with Ben Street and Anthony Pinciotti .

Cardenas toured Europe several times and performed three times at the Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland. He taught a. a. at the New School in New York, the Musician's Institute in Hollywood, at the Jamey Aebersold Summer Jazz Camps and at the University of Missouri . He continued to work with Adam Cruz , Eliane Elias , Chris Cheek , Ben Allison , Adam Kolker , Bria Skonberg , Adam Nussbaum , Mike Holober , Ted Nash and Kandace Springs throughout the 2010s . In the field of jazz, he was involved in 79 recording sessions between 1978 and 2018, according to Tom Lord . In his last album to date, Charlie and Paul , he interpreted compositions by Charlie Haden and Paul Motian, three of which have never been published, and four by Haden. "The interpretations are of nuanced understatement and delicacy, but not without a serious backbone," wrote Geoff Winston in the London Jazz News. "You can feel the deepest appreciation that arises from the individual experiences of every musician, and the knowledge that is gained through the unique and lasting engagement with two such important personalities."
