Bria Skonberg

Bria Skonberg (* 1983 ) is a Canadian jazz trumpeter , singer and songwriter who works in the fields of mainstream jazz and traditional jazz .

Life

Bria Skonberg grew up in Chilliwack , British Columbia . In Vancouver she led the formation Bria's Hot Five and The Big Bang Jazz Band , with which she first recorded in 2009; she also appeared as a soloist and singer with the Dal Richards Orchestra ( One More Time , 2009). She is also a co-founder of the women's band Mighty Aphrodite . After moving to New York, she worked a. a. with Jon-Erik Kellso , Bucky Pizzarelli , Nicholas Payton , Vince Giordano , Wycliffe Gordon ( Hello Pops 2011), Howard Alden and Scott Robinson , as well as music teacher and co-director of the Chilliwack Jazz Festival . In 2009 she presented her debut album Fresh , on which she interpreted standards such as Bert Kaempfert's L-OVE or the Janis Joplin number Mercedes Benz . So Is the Day (Random Act Records) followed in 2012 , which she recorded with Victor Goines , Wycliffe Gordon and John Pizzarelli . In the field of jazz, she participated in 31 recording sessions between 2005 and 2018. In mid-2014 her third album Into Your Own was released (also on Random Act Records); With a Twist (at Okeh ) followed in 2017, Nothing Never Happens in 2019 .

Awards

Skonberg received the 2006 CBC Jazz Award of Merit ; the following year she received the Kobe Jazz Street Award at the Breda Jazz Festival . In 2013 she was nominated by the Jazz Journalists Association in the Newcomer of the Year category.
