Robert Bachner

Robert Bachner (born April 27, 1972 in Vöcklabruck ) is an Austrian jazz musician ( trombone , composition , band leader).

Live and act

Bachner, whose older brother is the saxophonist Christian Bachner , received musical foundations from his parents. From the age of 10 he played the euphonium to switch to the trombone at the age of fourteen. From 1991 to 1995 he studied jazz trombone at the Bruckner Conservatory in Linz with Christian Radovan ; This was followed by composition studies at the Vienna Conservatory with Thomas Huber and Karl Heinz Czadek . In 2000 he stayed at New School University in New York City with Conrad Herwig . He has also completed master classes and private lessons with George Lewis , Ed Neumeister , Hugh Fraser , Bill Watrous , Robin Eubanks and others.

He has been a member of the Upper Austrian Jazz Orchestra and the Heavy Tuba group since the mid-1990s . Between 1996 and 2008 he was a member of the Vienna Art Orchestra ; He also played in Achim Tang's quintet , Nouvelle Cuisine, the Lungau Big Band and the Concert Jazz Orchestra Vienna. He also appears in the Flip Philipp & Ed Partyka Dectet, in the Jazz Big Band Graz , the groups Schwarzmarkt and Chameleon Changes and the Bastian Stein Octet. Under his own name, he released several albums with his quintet and a big band CD, as well as a duo album with Helmar Hill . In his latest project, Count Phenomium , Bachner devotes himself more to the euphonium. In addition to compositions for his own projects, Bachner u. a. also for heavy tuba or the Upper Austrian Jazz Orchestra. He can also be heard on records by Andy Lee Lang and Dorretta Carter and works with his wife, the singer Karin Bachner .

Bachner's "playing combines a warm, full and expressive tone with stupendous technique and an impressive range"; in Austria he is “one of the most sought-after and most innovative trombonists”.

Prizes and awards

In 2006 Bachner received the Hans Koller Prize in the “CD of the Year” category for Traveling Hard.
