Marilyn Lerner (born February 4, 1957 in Montreal ) is a Canadian jazz pianist and composer .

Lerner initially completed a classical music education and continued her training in jazz piano and improvisation at York University with Richie Beirach , Hal Galper , Cedar Walton , Joanne Brackeen and Fred Hersch .

In addition to regular solo appearances, she played with Jane Bunnett , Jean Derome , Gerry Hemingway , Steve Lacy , Vinny Golia , Bobby Hutcherson , Thomas Lehn , Joëlle Léandre , Arturo Sandoval and Tito Puente . She is the pianist of the Flying Klezmer Bulgar Band .

In 1992 she founded the improvisation duo Queen Mab with clarinetist Lori Freedman , which has been performing internationally as a trio since 2002, expanded by Ig Henneman . Together with Jane Bunnett, the album Birds are Returning was created in Havana in 1997 with Cuban musicians. With the singer David Wall and the singer Adrienne Cooper she interprets contemporary Yiddish poetry; together with the cellist Peggy Lee she presented the album Struck . In 2004 she received a Western Canadian Music Award for the duo album Special Angel , which she recorded with guitarist Sonny Greenwich . Marilyn Lerner also composes film music and accompanies silent films.
