Jean Derome (born June 29, 1955 in Montreal ) is a Canadian musician (saxophone, flute, vocals) and composer in the field of free jazz and improvised music .

Life

From 1972 to 1975 Derome studied music theory at St-Laurent Cegep with Michel Perrault, and then studied flute at the Quebec Conservatory until 1979 with Jean-Paul Major. During this time, the activities of his first important group, the Montreal avant-garde band Nébu with pianist Pierre St-Jacques and bassist Claude Simard, which also played at the French Châteauvallon Festival in 1977 and recorded a first album for Cadence in 1978 . Between 1978 and 1985 he also belonged to the Ensemble de Musique Improvisée de Montréal and some groups that formed musicians from this association. In the early 1980s he co-founded the record label Ambiances Magnétiques . Since 1983 he has also turned to the alto saxophone . He worked in a duo with Pierre Cartier, Robert M. Lepage and, since 1984, with René Lussier , with whom he also performed in the United States and Europe. He also toured Europe with Fred Frith's Keep the Dog . In addition, he worked a. a. with Han Bennink , Lori Freedman , Lars Hollmer , Marilyn Lerner , Karen Young , Louis Sclavis and Ron Samworth .

In Canada, Derome has also been known as a composer for film scores and for theater and dance productions since 1983; he also developed choreographies. In 1992 he received the Freddie Stone Award .
