Ron Samworth

Ron Samworth (* 1961 ) is a Canadian guitarist and composer of creative jazz .

Live and act

Samworth studied at the Banff Center for the Arts and then worked as a jazz musician from Vancouver. Between 1987 and 1994 he organized a weekly series of concerts at the Grunt Gallery . In the 1990s he was also one of the organizers of the jazz club The Glass Slipper .

He made his first recordings from 1990 to 1991 with the Lunar Adventures Quartet and the New Orchestra Workshop (NOW), of which he was artistic director from 1993 to 2002. Further recordings with the NOW in collaboration with Barry Guy and René Lussier were made in the mid-1990s.

As a band leader, he recorded two albums with the group Talking Pictures (with cellist Peggy Lee , trumpeter Bill Clark and drummer Dylan van der Schyff ) in the 1990s, and a third with Dutch saxophonist Jorrit Dijkstra was released in 2000.

As artistic director of the Barking Sphinx Performance Society, Samworth has worked on dance, theater and film projects. In 2001 the Barking Sphinx Ensemble emerged from the Society , in which Masa Anzai is also involved alongside Samworth and van Schyff . Samworth also worked as a sideman with François Houles' electro-acoustic quartet and the Hard Rubber Orchestra and with musicians such as John Zorn , Dave Douglas , Evan Parker , Barry Guy , Wayne Horvitz , Kuzuhisa Uchihashi , Yasuhiro Otani , Butch Morris , Han Bennink , Barre Phillips , Frank Gratkowski , Claude Ranger , René Lussier and Jean Derome together. He has performed at all major Canadian festivals, the Jazzfest Berlin and the Chicago Jazz Festival .

Samworth teaches at Capilano University .
