Karen Elizabeth Young (born June 19, 1951 in Montreal ) is a Canadian singer and songwriter who was successful in both jazz and world music .

Live and act

Young, a great niece of the choirmaster Berkley E. Chadwick, began playing guitar at the age of 14. In the late 1960s she worked as a folk singer ; she had a hit with Garden of Ursh . Between 1975 and 1979 she sang (as Karen Egan) in the bebop vocal group Bug Alley , which she founded and with whom she also appeared at the 1981 Monterey Jazz Festival . In the early 1980s she played leading roles in the musicals Mata Hari and Angel by David Rimmer and Edward Knoll. Then she formed the duo Young and Donato with bassist Michel Donato . The album Young & Donatowas nominated for a Juno Award in 1985. The following album, Contredanse , won a Felix Award in Quebec in the jazz category in 1988 . The duo toured France and the United States between 1987 and 1990.

Young then led her own bands, with whom she toured Canada and released nine albums. In 2008 she received another Félix Award for Âme, Corps et Desir (with medieval texts). She also toured with bassists Norman Lachapelle and Éric Auclair; she also performed with the trio of Sylvain Provost and with Jean Derome . She also composed for the feature films Joseph's Daughter by Ilana Schwartz , The Road from Kampuchea by Anne Henderson and for Revoir Julie by Jeanne Crepeau .

Young's daughter, Coral Egan, is also a singer and songwriter.
