Lori Anne Freedman (* 1958 in Toronto , Ontario ) is a Canadian (bass) clarinetist and composer who is active in the fields of contemporary music, improvisation music and electroacoustic music .

Live and act

The daughter of the composer Harry Freedman and the singer Mary Morrison studied clarinet from 1977 to 1981 at the University of Toronto . She also participated in the Academy of Woodwinds at the Banff Center for the Arts . After completing her studies, she took in-depth lessons from Pauline Oliveros (1981), Joaquim Valdepenas (1983-84) and Harry Sparnaay at the Sweelink Conservatory in Amsterdam.

After performing with various symphony orchestras in Canada, she became a member of the performance group Stichting Schnauzer in 1985 , with whose piece Johan she went on a European tour. She also played at the Concertgebouw in a group for contemporary music under the direction of Mauricio Kagel .

In 1986 she returned to Canada, where she played as bass clarinetist in the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra , the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra and the CBC Vancouver Orchestra . In 1987 she founded Thira , a group for contemporary music, with Mary Jo Carrabré , Therese Costes , George Meanwell , Victor Schultz , Michael Matthews and Laurel Ridd . In 1989 she became a member of the 5th Species wind quintet (with Anne Thompson , Libby Van Cleve , Shannon Peet and James Sommerville ).

From 1990 she worked with various groups for new music and dance theater projects in Toronto. With the dancer Lola MacLaughlin she performed in the piece Smudge in Toronto, Ottawa and Montreal. She also began playing contemporary music regularly in Amsterdam and formed a duo with jazz saxophonist Graham Ord .

Other groups that Freedman founded were Urge (1991, with Marie-Josée Chartier , Lisa Karrer , Fides Krucker , Linda Catlin Smith and Marìa Alejandra Nùñez-Robert ) and the duo Queen Mab with pianist Marilyn Lerner , with whom she made two albums recorded and performed in the Flying Bulgar Klezmer Band . At the Du Maurier New Music Festival in Winnipeg she played the clarinet concerto by John Corigliano in 1995 . More than 30 composers wrote pieces for the bass clarinetist.

In 1997 she founded VIEW (the Vancouver Improvising Ensemble of Women) with Peggy Lee , DB Boyko , Karen Graves , Marilyn Lerner and Lauri Lyster , an ensemble for contemporary and improvisational music. In the same year she performed in Amsterdam with Ig Henneman Tentet and composed and played the music for Brent Lott's dance piece His Banner Over Me . In 1998 she received the Freddie Stone Award . Her first solo album, Huskless , was released the following year .

In 2000 Freedman composed and played the music for Katie Duck's dance piece Amour , which was performed at the "Festival International New Dance" in Freiburg. During a three-month stay in Amsterdam in 2001 she performed compositions by Louis Andriessen and Misha Mengelberg and performed with Maggie Nichols , Luc Houtkamp , Ab Baars , Kaffe Matthews and Ig Henneman.

After returning to Canada, she formed the Lori Freedman Trio with Nicolas Caloia and Danielle Pallardy Roger . Since 2002 she has been teaching bass clarinet at McGill University . In the same year her second solo album À un moment donné was released . With Henneman, Queen Mab was expanded into an improvisation trio in 2002 , which also toured Europe several times and played at international festivals such as the Festival International de Jazz de Montréal . She also performed with Joëlle Léandre , Rohan de Saram and Rajesh Mehta .

In 2017 Freedman was elected to the Royal Society of Canada .
