Rajesh Mehta

Rajesh Mehta (born April 27, 1964 in Kolkata ) is an Indian-American improvisation and jazz musician and composer.

Live and act

Mehta came to the USA in 1970 and studied at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) until 1986 , where he then worked as an acoustic engineer and teacher in mathematics / science. In 1989 he was a master student of saxophonist and composer Anthony Braxton at the Mills College Center for Contemporary Music in Oakland / California . Since 1991 he has worked as a professional musician in Europe and lived first in Amsterdam , then in Berlin .

Mehta developed the meta-trumpet , an electronic-acoustic hybrid instrument and a graphic system of composition and notation. His interest in architecture is reflected in his Sounding Buildings project . In 2002/03 he presented his work in the seminar of the architect Daniel Libeskind at the Hochschule für Gestaltung in Karlsruhe . In 2004 he was Artist in Residence in Cork / Ireland .

In 1998 Mehta founded the record label TrueMuze in Hamburg together with the saxophonist Vlatko Kucan and the double bass player Peter Niklas Wilson .

Mehta goes on tour with three of his own ensembles: the Mehta-Lovens Duo with drummer Paul Lovens , The Innovative Music Meeting Trio with cellist Rohan de Saram and drummer Trichy Sankaran and The Mehta-Metric Ensemble with drummer Ray Kaczynski , the saxophonist Vlatko Kucan and the violinist Aleksander Kolkowski . In addition, he worked a. a. with Anthony Braxton , Phil Wachsmann , Tristan Honsinger , Pavel Fajt , Mark Harvey , Fred Lonberg-Holm , Uwe Oberg , Lori Freedman and Steve Noble .
