T. Sankaran

T. Sankaran ( Trichy Sankaran ; born July 27, 1942 in Trichy , Madras , British India ) is an Indian percussionist and one of the most important mridangam players in his country.

Life

Sankaran learned the mridangam game from a cousin. At the age of ten he came to Delhi , where he was promoted by Ravi Shankar and a student of the Mridangam master Palani Subramania Pillai . This enabled Sankaran to perform with the most important musicians of Carnatic music such as Ariyakkudi Ramanuja Iyengar , Chembai Vaidhyanatha Bhagavatar , Semmangudi Srinivasa Iyer , Madurai Mani Iyer , GN Balasubramaniam , Mudikondan Venkatarama Iyer and TN Swaminatha Pillai . His collaboration with Palani Subramania Pillai lasted until his death in 1962.

Sankaran's first appearance abroad was at the International Music Festival in Shiraz , Iran in 1969. In 1971 a famous concert with the tabla player Shanta Prasad , the sitar player Vilayat Khan and the violinist Lalgudi Jayaraman took place in Madras .

In the same year he moved to Canada, where he founded the South Indian Music Program at York University in Toronto with the Karnatak singer Jon Higgins . As part of his teaching activities as a professor, the textbook The Rhythmic Principles and Practice of South Indian Drumming was created here . He also taught as visiting professor at San Diego State University (1979–80) and Simon Fraser University (1992–98) and was artist in residence at Berklee College of Music (1995–99). In 1998 he was awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of Victoria .

Sankaran has given traditional concerts with tabla players such as Shanta Prasad , Zakir Hussain , Swapan Chaudhri and Sharada Sahai, and has performed with jazz musicians such as Anthony Braxton , Charlie Haden , Ed Thigpen , Glen Hall and Steve Gadd . With Ernie Tollar and Suba Sankaran he forms a trio that has mastered the traditional Indian music style as well as the contemporary one.
