Glen Hall

Glen Scott Hall (born August 7, 1950 in Winnipeg ) is a Canadian musician ( tenor and soprano saxophone , bass clarinet , composition ) of modern creative jazz . He is also Professor of Communication at Humber College .

Live and act

Hall was interested in music as a child, but did not begin to learn guitar and harmonica until he was thirteen . He first turned to blues and rock music before he also became interested in jazz , Indian classical music , flamenco , John Cage and Frank Zappa . He studied English literature and taught himself the saxophone and bass clarinet from 1967 onwards. After completing his literature studies in 1973, he went to Berklee College of Music , where he studied for four semesters. In 1975 he returned to Winnipeg, where he founded the experimental jazz ensemble The Whole Life Communication Orchestra and became a member of Mark Rutherford's Jazz Composers Workshop . He also played in the jazz rock band Zdenka and, after a stay at the Darmstadt Summer Course in 1976, studied the music of Karlheinz Stockhausen . In 1979 he recorded his first album, The Book of the Heart , and then went on an international tour for six months before moving to Toronto . There he taught at Humber College , but also worked with Ed Bickert , Rob Pitch, Don Thompson , Dave Young , Claude Ranger and Terry Clarke . For the arrangements of his second album The Mother of the Book (1985) he was able to win Gil Evans . Then he founded the Strange Attractors and in 1998 the quintet OutSource , later redShift and Powerbuch . He performed with the percussion group Nexus and Trichy Sankaran as well as with Ray Anderson , Gerry Hemingway , Dominic Duval , Sabir Mateen and the Sonic Youth guitarists Lee Ranaldo and William Hooker .
