Dave Young

David "Dave" Anthony Young (born January 29, 1940 in Winnipeg ) is a Canadian double bass player who has emerged in particular in the field of modern jazz , but also in classical concert music.

Young, whose older sister is also a musician, took piano lessons as a child. He later switched to bass and performed with his sister, the pianist Sydney Young McInnis (* 1934). From 1961 to 1966 he was a member of the guitarist Lenny Breau's band , with whom he later played again and again. In 1962 he studied at the Berklee College of Music , then to a degree in economics 1967-1969 at the Conservatory of Toronto . In addition, he played with Moe Koffman and was then parallel to his jazz career in the symphony orchestras of Edmonton (1970–1972), Hamilton (1972–1974, 1976f.) And Winnipeg (1974–1975).

In the jazz area he worked regularly with Don Thompson , Ed Bickert , Terry Clarke and Rob McConnell and also played with numerous guest soloists. After a Japan tour in 1975 with Oscar Peterson, he also worked in his trios from the mid-1980s and also gave concerts in a duo with him. He also belonged to the combos of Carol Britto , Bernie Senensky and Wray Downes . The album Fables and Dreams , released with Coleader Phil Dwyer , won the 1983 Juno Award for best mainstream release of the year. In the next few years he was often on tour with his own bands.
