Samuel Lewis "Sammy" Nestico , also Sam Nestico (born February 6, 1924 in Pittsburgh , Pennsylvania ; † January 17, 2021 there ), was an American jazz musician ( arranger , composer and author ).

Live and act

Nestico holds a BA in Music Education from Duquesne University . In 1941 he was employed as an arranger at the radio station WCAE in Pittsburgh. He then served as a musician during World War II and, after five years after the war, rejoined the Air Force as a permanent arranger at the radio station ABC in Pittsburgh. He spent the last 15 years of his "military career" with the United States Marine Band , conducting the White House Dance Orchestra, and composing music for recruitment shows.

Shortly after leaving the army, Sammy Nestico started his second career as an arranger and composer for the Count Basie Orchestra . From 1970 to 1984 he directed the recording of ten albums, four of which won a Grammy Award . At the same time he was engaged as an arranger for Capitol Records and participated in numerous albums. He also arranged and directed the recordings of well-known artists such as Phil Collins , Sarah Vaughan , Bing Crosby , Frank Sinatra and many others. The composer and arranger Sammy Nestico, who mainly worked for big bands in the jazz field, was considered a master of his craft.

Nestico made a name for itself not only in the music industry, but also in film and television. He produced film music for the most important film studios, such as B. for 20th Century Fox , Universal , Paramount and Warner Brothers .

He has received several awards, most recently from the ASMAC (American Society of Music Arrangers and Composers) and the BBAA (Big Band Academy of America). In 1998/1999 he was a professor at the University of Georgia. By the time he died, he had published nearly 600 music education booklets that are widely used in American schools.

A jazz prize , the Sammy Nestico Award, is named after Nestico and is awarded annually to young American jazz composers after a composition competition.
