DARPA Grand Challenge 2005

The DARPA Grand Challenge 2005 was a race between autonomous robotic vehicles that took place from October 8th to 9th, 2005 in the Mojave Desert in the southwestern United States . The start and finish were in Primm , Nevada .

The race was the second competition in the program initiated by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency DARPA to promote the development of autonomous vehicles. The winner of the $ 2 million race was the team led by Prof. Sebastian Thrun from Stanford University in a modified VW Touareg called " Stanley ".

A total of 195 teams from 36 US states and 4 other states registered for the race. After a preselection, a total of 43 teams were invited to a qualification in order to prove the suitability of their vehicles and thus qualify for the race. 23 vehicles survived the qualification and finally competed against each other in the race.

Originally 40 vehicles were selected for qualification (National Qualification Event (NQE)). On August 23, 2005, 3 more teams were allowed to qualify. Qualification took place from September 27th to October 5th in Fontana, California on California Speedway . 23 of 43 teams qualified.

On October 6th, the qualified teams transported their vehicles to the launch site. October 7th was scheduled for repair work.

The vehicles started one after the other at fixed time intervals, with 22 vehicles starting on October 8th and one on October 9th . Five teams were able to cover the full race distance of 131.6 miles (212.76 km) to the finish. However, only four of the teams were able to meet the time limit of ten hours.

The winner of the DARPA Grand Challenge 2005 is the “Stanford Racing Team” with their vehicle “Stanley”. Stanley completed the course in 6 hours 53 minutes and 8 seconds, an average speed of 19.1 mph (30.7 km / h). Second and third in the race was the best team “Red Team” and “Red Team Too” with the vehicles “Sandstorm” and “H1ghlander”. They needed 7:04:50, corresponding to 18.6 mph (29.9 km / h) and 7:14:00, corresponding to 18.2 mph (29.3 km / h).
