H1ghlander

The H1ghlander is a self-driving unmanned vehicle ( land vehicle ). It was built by the Red Team at Carnegie Mellon University and is a heavily modified Hummer H1 (built in 1999). In 2005 it took part in the DARPA Grand Challenge .

The sensors used by H1ghlander are LIDAR units for range measurement, a steerable LIDAR (in the sphere on top of the vehicle), GPS and an inertial navigation system .

H1ghlander took part in the DARPA Grand Challenge on October 8, 2005 , where he qualified for pole position and covered the distance in 7 hours and 14 minutes. It reached the 3rd place of 5 vehicles that contested the 132 mile course. It was overtaken by Sandstorm, its sister vehicle, which took second place.

Cultural clues

The lobster that Denzel Washington drove in the film Déjà Vu was very similar to the H1ghlander. It also had the sphere on the roof, SICK laser sensors in the same position, a camera tube on one side of the vehicle and many other visible similarities.
