Mataranka is a community in the Top End of Australia's Northern Territory .

The small town is about 431 km southeast of the territorial capital Darwin and about 114 km south of Katherine . In 2016, the Australian census counted 310 residents.

The small town of Mataranka is located on the Roper River and on the Stuart Highway and near the famous thermal springs Mataranka Hot Springs in Elsey National Park , the bitter and the Rainbow Springs. The town was also made famous by Jeannie Gunn's novel We of the Never-Never , which takes place on a cattle farm in the immediate vicinity called Elsey Station .

Mataranka Station is part of the Katherine Rural College at Charles Darwin University .
