The Roper River is a river in the north of the Australian territory Northern Territory . Ludwig Leichhardt named it in October 1845 after John Roper , a member of his first Australian expedition from 1844 to 1845.

River course
The Roper River arises in Elsey National Park near the town of Mataranka from the confluence of the Waterhouse River and Roper Creek and flows into the Gulf of Carpentaria after 400 km . The river is navigable for a length of about 145 km to the tidal limit at the ford in Roper Bar .
The Roper River is part of the southern border of the Arnhem Land and also represents the northern border of the Limmen National Park .
