The Limmen National Park (English Limmen National Park) is located in the Roper Gulf Region in the Northern Territory of Australia , about 305 kilometers southeast of Katherine and 75 kilometers northwest of Borroloola . It covers around 9608.46 square kilometers. It was declared a national park on July 17, 2012.

General

The park is very isolated. In large areas it has a rocky landscape with weathered sandstone formations , which form a spectacular sight and are criss-crossed by alluvial valleys. Although the park offers significant recreational opportunities, access to it is quite difficult, which has helped to preserve the isolated and pristine character of the reserve.

Particularly worth seeing are the sandstone formations, which are often formed in the shape of a tower or cathedral and are referred to as lost cities or abandoned towns.

From a climatic point of view, the national park lies in a transition zone between the humid tropics and drier areas. The average rainfall of 800 millimeters is mainly recorded in the period from December to April. Before the rainy season, temperatures of over 40 ° C can be reached.

tourism

In the park there is the possibility of camping, resting and barbecue areas as well as toilets are available. Due to the size of the area and its remoteness, good planning and preparation are required, especially since paths in the park can also be temporarily closed. Swimming in the waters of the national park is not permitted almost everywhere because of the crocodiles that live there .
