Borroloola is a small town in the Roper Gulf region of the Northern Territory of Australia. The place is on the McArthur River within the Narwinbi Aboriginal Land Trust , about 50 kilometers south of the confluence of the river in the Gulf of Carpentaria and about 1000 kilometers southeast of Darwin . Borroloola is the administrative center of the Gulf region of Australia. Of the 871 inhabitants, around 76% are Aborigines .

Zinc , lead and silver are mined in the vicinity of Borroloola . The McArthur River zinc mine is approximately 70 kilometers to the southwest. Borroloola is known for its good fishing opportunities, especially after Barramundi .

Borroloola was first mentioned in 1885. At that time, the place was considered an outpost of civilization and a stronghold for illegal activities such as smuggling .
