The Nitmiluk National Park (formerly Katherine Gorge National Park ) is a 1989 founded, 2921 km² national park in the Australian administrative unit Northern Territory , 244 km southeast of Darwin and 32 km northeast of Katherine . In the north, the park borders on the Kakadu National Park .
Part of the park is the Katherine Gorge , a 12 km long system of 13 gorges with sandstone rock walls up to 70 m high, carved into the Arnhem Plateau by the Katherine River over a period of a billion years . The gorges and their surrounding areas have spiritual significance for the Aboriginal -Volk the Jawoyn . “Nitmiluk” in the Jawoyn language means something like the place of the cicada dream paths . The park has been returned to the Jawoyn's possession and is co-administered by the Parks and Wildlife Commission of the Northern Territory in accordance with their traditional laws . Historic rock paintings can still be found in the area of the park .
The Edith Falls , a large lake fed by a waterfall, is located on the western boundary of the park.
