The Litchfield National Park ( English Litchfield National Park ) is located 128 km south of the city of Darwin in the Northern Territory in Australia . It got its name from the explorer Frederick Henry Litchfield , who explored larger parts of the Northern Territory in 1864.

General

Despite the very heavy monsoon rains in summer , the national park can be visited all year round. The starting point is usually the village of Batchelor on the edge of the park .

The crocodiles ( Australian crocodile and estuarine crocodile ), which occur in large numbers in other touristically attractive areas of Northern Australia, pose a comparatively minor problem in Litchfield National Park. Nevertheless, attacks on people occasionally occur, most recently in spring 2008.

landscape

The landscape of the national park is characterized by its four waterfalls (see under sights), but also by forest landscapes, which are characterized on the sandstone plateau by many typical plant species such as the eucalyptus miniata and Eucalyptus tetrodonta. Monsoon rainforests occur in the canyons that the rivers dug underground near the falls.

Wildlife

In mammals are u. a. the antelope kangaroo and Agile Wallaby , the northern quoll , the spotted short-nosed bandicoot , the Sugar Glider and Kusu-type Trichosurus arnhemensis observed. There are also different bat species, such as the rare orange horseshoe bat . Is particularly rich bird life of the national park in which, among other things, the wedge-tailed eagle , the black kite , the Mangrovepirol , the Australian fig oriole , the Pazifikkoel which Glanzspitzendrongo which dollarbird , the rainbow bee-eater and various cockatoos and parakeets are to be mentioned.
