The Finke Gorge National Park is one established in 1967, 458 square kilometer National Park in the Australian management unit Northern Territory , 1,318 kilometers south of Darwin . The closest town is Alice Springs , from there you drive around 135 kilometers on Larapinta Drive via Hermannsburg to the national park.
Part of the park is Palm Valley , an oasis valley that is home to many rare plant species. The world's last population of the Marienpalme can be found here. In 1982, oil and natural gas wells were drilled in the Palm Valley. A pipeline has been running to Alice Springs, 138 km away, since 1983. The Finke River is one of the oldest rivers on earth, up to 350 million years old. Here he made his way between the Krichauff Range in the west and the James Range in the east.
In the park there are remnants of the culture of the Arrernte Aboriginal people . Initiation celebrations were held in a natural amphitheater between the Old Man and Old Woman rock formations . Ancient rock carvings have been preserved on Sullivan Creek .
