The Mary River National Park is a national park in the north of the Australian Northern Territory , 150 km east of Darwin and west of the Kakadu National Park . It consists of several parts on the Mary River , the McKinlay River and on the coast of the Arafura Sea . It was merged in 2007 from what were previously thirteen separate areas. The park can be reached via the Arnhem Highway .
Individual areas
The individual parts of the national park (and former protected areas) are:
- Mary River Conservation Reserve , Point Stuart Coastal Reserve and Stuart Tree Historical Reserve on Lake Arafura
- Alligator Lagoon Conservation Area , Shady Camp Conservation Area , Swim CreekConservation Area , Opium Creek Conservation Area , Boggy Springs Conservation Area , Jimmys Creek Conservation Area , Wildman River Conservation Area, and Annaburroo Delta Block Conservation Area on the north side of the Arnhem Highway
- Mary River Crossing Conservation Area and McKinlay River Conservation Area on the south side of the Arnhem Highway
Flora and fauna
The park offers wetlands , monsoon forests as well as forests in which the paperbark trees of the genus Melaleuca, named after their bark, predominate.
It provides a habitat for saltwater crocodiles ( Crocodylus porosus ), agile wallabies ( Macropus agilis ), giant storks ( Ephippiorhynchus asiaticus ), cleft-footed geese ( Anseranas semipalmata ) and barramundis ( Lates calcarifer ).
