course
The Arnhem Highway branches off about 35 km south of Darwin, in the village of McMinns Lagoon, to the east from the Stuart Highway (N1). The first major town on the highway is Humpty Doo . The place is in the middle of extensive mango plantations . Humpty Doo is known for the Big Boxing Crocodile , as well as the nearby Reptile World animal park , in which crocodiles and other native species are kept. The Fogg Dam , built in the 1950s, is 20 km east of the city . This was to serve to flood the land bordering the Adelaide River and to grow rice there . The plan failed and today Fogg Dam is the last visible sign of that plan. The area has since become home to many species of animals.
Shortly after Humpty Doo, the Arnhem Highway crosses the Adelaide River . Further east, the highway to Corroboree forms the southern border of the Djukbinj National Park . Then the route continues for about 20 km in a south-easterly direction until it reaches the southernmost point with the crossing of the Mary River .
After about half of the total length, the unpaved Old Jim Jim Road branches off to the southeast as a 90 km long alternative connection to the Kakadu Highway (S21). After another 20 km the Arnhem Highway reaches the Kakadu National Park. It crosses the Wildman River , the West Alligator River and the South Alligator River .
Eventually the road reaches its end point Jabiru, the largest place in Kakadu National Park. In addition to the Arnhem Highway, the Kakadu Highway meets here from the south, the Strait of Ubirr from the north and the Strait of Jabiru East from the east, the airport and the Ranger uranium mine .
The highest point on the highway is 78 m, the lowest is 3 m.
