Humpty Doo is a small town with 678 inhabitants in the Australian state of Northern Territory . The village is on the Arnhem Highway , about 40 km east of Darwin . Officials suspect that the name of the city goes back to the Aboriginal language Umdidu , which means "resting place".

history

Humpty Doo was the scene of a significant agricultural experiment in the 1950s. Territory Rice Ltd leased 303,000 acres of land to grow rice in the Adelaide River floodplain .

In 1956 the Australian Air Force built the “Fogg Dam” there, through which the water supply for the growing area should be ensured. Since the capacity of 3.4 billion liters turned out to be too small, another dam, the "Harrison Dam", was built nearby, which could hold about three times the amount of water.

When the area was declared a bird sanctuary in 1959, the failure of the project was foreseeable, and in 1962 rice cultivation was stopped.

The project failed for several reasons: there was a lack of transport capacities for the cultivated rice, the water supply was not controlled, the financing was not secured, the responsibilities were not centralized sufficiently and the mottled geese used the seeds.

climate

The temperatures reach their maximum in October to December with mean maximums of 35.6 ° C and 33.8 ° C and mean minimums of 22.7 ° C and 23.9 ° C. In July, the coldest month, mean maxima of 31.3 ° C and mean minima of 14.9 ° C are reached. The annual rainfall averages 1401 mm.

economy

The cultivation of mangoes plays an important role in Humpty Doo, which is visible from afar through the plantations . Across the region, Darwin 2009 10.661 tons worth about 28 million in the season AUD harvested.
