The Duncan Road (formerly Duncan Highway ) is an unpaved outback track on the western border of the Australian Northern Territory and in the northeast of Western Australia . It connects the Victoria Highway just before the border with the Great Northern Highway in Halls Creek .

course

About 18 km east of the border of the Northern Territory to Western Australia and 56 km east of Kununurra , the Duncan Road branches off from the Victoria Highway (N1) to the south. It crosses the border several times in the further course and roughly follows the course of the Ord River . After about 170 km you can see the foothills of the Bungle Bungle Range , the characteristic hills of the Purnululu National Park , in the west . However, there is no direct access to the park from Duncan Road. At Nicholson , 100 km further south, the Buntine Highway joins from the east. The Duncan Road runs from there in a westerly direction and ends after 160 km in Halls Creek on the Great Northern Highway (N1).

The highest point in the course of the road is 52 m, the lowest is 40 m.

history

The road emerged as a dirt path that connected the various cattle farms along the Ord River. In order to promote the industrialization of this region, the route under the name Wyndham-Nicholson Road was expanded from 1950 to 1956 . It was not named Duncan Highway until 1961 , after Ron Duncan , who worked as a road construction engineer for the government in the area in the 1950s.

In 1976 the road lost its highway status and has been called Duncan Road ever since .

Road conditions

Although it is a dirt road, the condition is consistently good. All river crossings are paved. However, there is no refueling facility on over 400 km.
