The Keep River National Park is a 569 km² national park in the northwest of the Northern Territory , Australia .

location

The park is on the border between Northern Territory and Western Australia , 418 km southwest of Darwin and 468 km west of Katherine . The nearest town is Kununurra , about 50 km away. Access to the park is via a gravel road from the Victoria Highway . It can also be used by normal vehicles during the dry season.

history

Rock paintings at the Nganalam Rock Art Site

Aborigines from the Mirriuwoong and Gadjerong groups have lived in this area for thousands of years . Traces of this settlement can be seen in numerous places in the park. At Ginger Hill , interesting structures are found. Rock paintings typical of this region can be seen in Jarnem and Jinumum .

The national park is named after the river of the same name, the Keep River . It is first mentioned in 1894 by rancher Michael Patrick Durack and is believed to be named after Henry Francis Keep , who explored the area in 1888.

The national park was established in 1991.

The park is characterized by red sandstone formations similar to the Purnululu National Park .
