The Barranyi National Park is a 45 km² national park that covers almost all of North Island in the Gulf of Carpentaria . It's one of the most remote destinations in the Northern Territory , Australia .

National park

The island belongs to the Aborigines of the Yanyuwa group . The task of the national park is to protect and preserve the culture and tradition of the indigenous people. The park is therefore run by the Parks and Wildlife Services of the Northern Territory together with the local Aboriginal administration.

The island is located within the Sir Edward Pellew Islands around 30 km from the mouth of the McArthur River and the Carrington Channel . The best way to get there is by boat from King Ash Bay , about 21 miles northeast of Borroloola .

Visitors did not need a permit to enter the island. However, access to some areas is not permitted.

Flora and fauna

The main attractions of the national park include the long sandy beaches, such as in Paradise Bay , the small bays and sandstone cliffs. The interior of the island is dominated by low, open forests and sandy areas because of the poor soils. Strangler figs can also be found in a small area . The proximity to the mainland ensures that both sea and land birds are native to the park. Four different species of sea turtles lay their eggs on the sandy beaches. Since saltwater crocodiles, poisonous jellyfish and other dangerous aquatic life are found in the waters around the island, swimming is not permitted. Caution is also advisable when walking along the beaches because of the crocodiles.
