Savannah Way

The Savannah Way is a road connection in northern Australia , which consists of several highways and outback slopes. It extends over a length of 3500 kilometers in an east-west direction and connects Cairns in Queensland on the east coast of Australia with Broome on the northwest coast of Western Australia . The Savannah Way is a road that opens up the northern outback and numerous national parks along the route for tourists. Much of the Savannah Way is identical to that of National Highway 1 .

Queensland

The Savannah Way begins in Cairns, where it initially runs north as the Captain Cook Highway . In Smithfield, the Savannah Way branches off to the west and is now signposted as the Kennedy Highway . Its course follows the Savannah Way for about 240 kilometers to Forty Mile Scrub National Park and the junction with Gulf Developmental Road . This is part of the Savannah Way along its entire length to Normanton . From Normanton, the Savannah Way continues west. This section is known in part as the Great Top Road and in other sections as Floraville Road . On this section, the Savannah Way passes the villages of Burketown and Doomadgee, as well as Hell's Gate Roadhouse, before reaching the Northern Territory border .

Northern Territory

Coming from Queensland the Savannah Way leads first to Borroloola . From there it follows the course of the Carpentaria Highway in a westerly direction to Cape Crawford . There the Savannah Way branches off in a northerly direction and leads on an unpaved gravel road to Roper Bar on the Roper Highway . Following its course, the Savannah Way meets the Stuart Highway at Mataranka and follows it to Katherine . From Katherine, the Savannah Way follows the Victoria Highway to the border with Western Australia.

Western Australia

In Western Australia, the Savannah Way initially follows the course of the Victoria Highway until it meets the Great Northern Highway . With part of its route, this forms the last section of the Savannah Way. The route runs from Wyndham along the edge of the Kimberley region via Halls Creek , Fitzroy Crossing and Derby to Broome , where the Savannah Way ends.
