Course of the road
|
The Carpentaria Highway is a trunk road in the northeast of the Australian Northern Territory . It connects the Stuart Highway at Daly Waters with the Savannah Way in Borroloola on the Gulf of Carpentaria . The road is signposted as National Highway 1 along its entire length .
course
The Carpentaria Highway begins 4 km south of Daly Waters , where it branches off in an easterly direction from the Stuart Highway (N1 / N87). On the way there are a few turns to scattered farms in the outback . The only larger town on the Carpentaria Highway is Cape Crawford after 269 km. At Cape Crawford the Tablelands Highway (S11) branches off and leads south to the Barkly Highway (N66). The Savannah Way flows from the north , which is an outback track in this area and heads north to the Roper Highway (S20).
The Carpentaria Highway continues together with the Savannah Way in a northeast direction past the McArthur River Mine , where silver, zinc and lead are mined, as well as the now closed Merlin Diamond Mine . The Carpentaria Highway ends in Borroloola, about 70 km northeast of the mines, and the Savannah Way (R1) continues as the Great Top Road in a southeast direction to Burketown in Queensland .
The highest point on the highway is 319 m, the lowest is 7 m.
Road conditions and gas stations
The Carpentaria Highway is paved throughout, but sometimes only has one lane. The asphalt has sometimes deep ruts, so that special care is required when driving with cars with normal ground clearance. Refueling is available at the beginning of the street at Hiway Inn , in Cape Crawford and at the end of the street in Borroloola.
