The Roper Highway is a 298 km long trunk road in the north of the Australian Northern Territory . It connects Mataranka on the Stuart Highway with the settlement of Ngukurr and Numbulwar in southeastern Arnhem Land , both former Aboriginal mission stations , on the coast of the Gulf of Carpentaria . From its beginning on the Stuart Highway to the Roper Bar settlement , the Roper Highway is part of the Savannah Way .

course

The first paved road branches off south of Mataranka from the Sturt Highway (N1) and runs south of Elsey National Park to the east. It crosses the Strangways River , runs south of the eponymous Roper River through Aboriginal land ( Mangarrayi ) and reaches the Roper Valley station . After another 40 kilometers, the asphalt pavement stops and at Roper Bar the highway crosses the Roper River and the Wilton River . 33 kilometers further on is Ngukurr.

The last section of the route, just a dirt road, leads through the Arnhem Land to the east-northeast and may only be used with special permission from the authorities. It leads over the Numbulwar Road to Numbulwar on the estuary of the Rose River .

The highest point on the highway is 164 m, the lowest is 12 m.
