Ngukurr is an Aboriginal settlement 490 kilometers southeast of Darwin and 330 kilometers south of Katherine in southeast Arnhem Land in the Northern Territory , Australia .
history
The Aborigines of the Yugul Mangi have lived with their own language in the area of today's location for 40,000 years . In 1908, the Aboriginal Mission Station was founded as the Roper River Mission on the banks of the Roper River by the Anglican Church of Australia . After a flood in 1940, it was rebuilt 10 kilometers away on hilly terrain, today's Ngukurr. In 1966, the Australian government took over the settlement. In 1988 the Yugul Mangi Aboriginal Council was founded and a local administration was created. 2008 passed the administrative sovereignty to the Roper Gulf Shire .
Locality
The local Aborigines speak kriol ; English and other indigenous languages are not widely used.
In the place with 1149 residents (as of 2016) there is a school, police station, a commercial shop and health center as well as a campsite. In the dry season, a bus runs twice a week on the Roper Highway from Katharine to Ngukurr. The Limmen National Park is located near the village . There are good fishing opportunities on the Roper River.
During the rainy season from December to May, the place can only be reached by plane or boat on the Roper River .
Culture
A colony of artists lives in the settlement and paints pictures in the imaginations of their dream time . In May 2012 the Yugul Mangi Festival took place in this small town .
