course
North of Mount Strangways , the Sandover Highway branches off from the Plenty Highway (S12) to the north and runs along with the Central Australian Railway to the north for about 30 km, before turning to the northeast. In its central part it runs parallel to the Sandover River , from which it takes its name. The road ends in Lake Nash on the Georgina River on the Queensland border .
The highest point on the highway is at 681 m, the lowest at 227 m.
The Sandover Highway runs through semi-arid deserts and Spinifex areas.
Road conditions and gas stations
The route leads through the area of the Urapuntja - Aborigines . As long as you do not leave the road, however, no permit is required for the passage .
Since the Ammaroo station was closed, there has only been one refueling point in Arlparra , one of around 25 Aboriginal settlements in the so-called Utopia region . About 2000 Anmatyerre and Alyawarre Aborigines live in this area , including about 200 artists. Although the first part of the route can also be covered by normal vehicles, a four-wheel drive vehicle is recommended from Ammaroo .
