The Sturt Highway is a trunk road in southeast Australia . It connects the Hume Highway southeast of Wagga Wagga with the Main North Road in Gawler and runs in an east-west direction from New South Wales through Victoria to South Australia . It is an important part of the direct road link between Sydney and Adelaide.

The Sturt Highway is named after the explorer Charles Sturt . The Sturt Highway should not be confused with the Stuart Highway , which runs between Adelaide and Darwin .

Intersection of Sturt and Olympic Highway in Wagga Wagga

The Sturt Highway begins about eight kilometers north of Tarcutta at a junction with the Hume Highway (N31), about 400 km southwest of Sydney. The Hume Highway is the main road connecting the metropolises of Sydney and Melbourne .

The road starts its way west and after 45 km it reaches the town of Wagga Wagga . This is the largest city in inland New South Wales. The Olympic Highway (R41) crosses in a north-south direction in Wagga Wagga .

95 km to the northwest is Narrandera , the next major city. In Narrandera the Newell Highway (N39) crosses in a north-south direction. Narrandera is known as the center of an agriculturally very productive area, which was created by extensive artificial irrigation. Today, in addition to traditional grain cultivation and sheep breeding, citrus fruits and wine are also successfully grown.

Another 170 km to the west is Hay . Several large highways meet in Hay. The Cobb Highway (R75), which runs from Wilcannia in the north of the state to Echuca on the border between New South Wales and Victoria, crosses in a north-south direction . In addition, coming from Bathurst to the northeast, the Mid Western Highway (R24) meets the Sturt Highway in Hay.

About 210 km further west the Sturt Highway runs through Euston . Euston offers connection to Robinvale via a bridge over the Murray River , which is the northern end point of the Murray Valley Highway (B400).

With Buronga the last town in New South Wales is for further 80 km reached before the Sturt Highway crosses the border to Victoria. From Broken Hill in the north the Silver City Highway (B79) leads to Buronga. The first updraft power plant in Australia is to be built near the city , but construction has not yet started.

Victoria

After the Sturt Highway crosses the Murray River, it passes through Mildura , the only major town in Victoria that the highway passes. Mildura is the center of the Sunraysia region , a region where many citrus fruits and grapes are grown. Just outside of Mildura, the Calder Highway (A79) branches off to the south. This leads to Melbourne via Bendigo .

From Mildura, the Sturt Highway runs about 120 km west until it reaches the border between Victoria and South Australia.

South Australia

After the Sturt Highway has crossed the border into South Australia, it is the first larger town to reach Renmark . The city was the first settlement founded by Europeans on the course of the Murray River.

Continuing to the west, the Sturt Highway passes the village of Berri after 20 km , which is primarily used by the former Berri Ltd. and whose fruit juice brand Berri Juice is well known.

After another 60 km to the west, the village of Waikerie is reached. The paddle steamer Murray River Queen is moored there. For many years this was a luxury cruise ship on the Murray River and now serves as a hotel and restaurant. It is now only used occasionally for shorter trips on the river.

On its further way west, the Sturt Highway passes the Barossa Valley , the most famous wine-growing region in Australia. It runs north of Nuriootpa , the economic center of the Barossa Valley.

In the town of Gawler about 40 km northeast of the state capital Adelaide, the Sturt Highway meets the Main North Road (B19 / A32). As a Gawler Bypass , it leads around the city in the west. There the Northern Expressway (NM20) branches off to the west, which leads to the Princes Highway (NA1) west of Adelaide. In Evanston , the Sturt Highway ends on the Main North Road (A52), which leads to North Adelaide.
