Berri

Berri is a small town on the Murray River in the Riverland region of the Australian state of South Australia . The name is supposed to mean wide bend of the river in an Aboriginal language .

history

The first Europeans reached the area of the later Berri in 1830 with the expedition of Charles Sturt . For many years the area was an undeveloped part of a farm. Only when the water of the Murray River could be used for irrigation in 1910 was further development possible. The city was officially founded on February 9, 1911. The plantations set up in the course of irrigation were soon followed by businesses that processed the agricultural products. In 1943, fruit juices were first marketed under the Berri Juice brand, which is still widely used in Australia today .

climate

Climate data have not been officially measured in Berri since 1965. However, similar values are to be expected as in Renmark, 12 km away : The temperatures reach their maximum in January with 16 ° C to 34 ° C and their minimum in July with 4 ° C to 17 ° C (mean minima and maxima). The annual rainfall is only 223 mm.

traffic

The location on the Murray River was decisive for the founding of Berri, as at the beginning of the 20th century there was a need for the supply of the river steamers operating there. Due to the unreliable water levels, however, commercial shipping has largely been replaced by land-based transport and is now only represented in the form of excursion boats.

The connection to the railway network was completed in 1928. The next railway line ends today in Loxton, about 21 km south (freight only). Long-distance buses connect Berri, however. a. with Adelaide and Sydney .

Berri is not far from the Sturt Highway , which runs from Gawler to Wagga Wagga and is part of the long-distance route between Adelaide and Sydney .
