Renmark is about 250 kilometers northeast of Adelaide near the border with Victoria . The Sturt Highway between Adelaide and Sydney runs through the city.
history
Aboriginal people have settled on the Murray River for at least 40,000 years. Captain Charles Sturt was the first European to explore the area in January 1830 when he was sailing the Murray River and eventually reaching Lake Alexandrina . In 1851, pasture land was designated for the first time in the area of what would later become Renmark. The settlement began to grow in 1887 after an irrigation system was created by George and William Chaffey in which the waters of the Murray were brought into the city in open canals. So orchards could be established. From 1893 to 1904 the place was administered by the Renmark Irrigation Trust , an association of local farmers. In 1904 the District of Hamley was established with Renmark as its center. In the late 1960s, the open irrigation channels were replaced by closed pipelines.
economy
Nowadays the area is known for growing grapes, citrus fruits, tomatoes, various vegetables, wheat, cotton, pistachios and almonds.
